About the Photographer
Born in Long Island, NY in 1958, the son of an artist and an electrical engineer, Howie Mortman lives a diverse life with many passions that all seem to overlap. Gaining strength, support and inspiration from his wife and three children, he feels privileged to have two complimentary passions: medicine and photography.
As an Obstetrician he dedicates himself to bringing life safely and lovingly into the world. As a Gynecologist he strives to help patients preserve and enhance their health and quality of life. Ultimately together his patients and he deal with life and death on a daily basis. As a photographer Howie Mortman lives to capture "the moment" so that it never dies, one that "speaks to him", and to preserve it forever. When subject, light and color all come together to create a photo that will bring joy to others — then the goal is achieved.
Landscape, travel, wildlife and dance provide subject matter for Howie's photography. Howie is particularly inspired by the landscape surrounding his quaint New England town of Sharon, Connecticut. An avid bird watcher and cyclist, he enjoys the scenic trails, the forested hills and cultivated valleys, the old colonial stonewalls, and historic farms, the fast-moving rivers, covered bridges, and peaceful country lakes. Howie's landscape photographs capture the exquisite, sunlit golds and reds of New England's autumn foliage, the lush greens of fertile summer farmland, and the muted, misty grays of springtime rain.
Howie's wildlife photography features many animals native to Litchfield County, Connecticut; Bald Eagles, herons, geese, foxes, deer, and even moose. Patience, skill, and an intimate knowledge of the local landscape enable Howie to document these beautiful creatures in their natural setting.
Travel photography is another passion for Howie. Most recently, trips to Italy, France and Israel have provided fodder for his work. Whether documenting the street cafes of Paris, the classic architecture of Rome, or Mea Shearim, the Hasidic area of Jerusalem, Howie enjoys traveling with a camera.
Dance photography is Howie's latest endeavor. Particularly relevant to his interest in Dance photography is his daughter's enrollment in the Nutmeg Conservatory, a pre-eminent classical ballet school based in Torrington, Connecticut. The Nutmeg Conservatory has utilized Howie's dance photographs in advertisements, brochures, programs, and other promotional materials. Most important to Howie, his working relationship with the Nutmeg Conservatory has enabled him to capture the spirit and essence of amazing instructors, dedicated students and performers, and their common binding thread — the love of Dance.
Howie Mortman has exhibited his work with the Sharon Audubon Center and Wildlife Sanctuary in Sharon, CT, the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts in Torrington, CT, and the Sharon Hospital in Sharon, CT, The Washington Art Association in Washington Depot, CT, The Simsbury Chamber Music Festival in Simsbury, CT, the Wolcott House Decorating Center in Torrington, CT, The New Britain Museum May Gala, in New Britain, CT, the Freeport Memorial Library in Long Island, NY and the Salmagundi Club in NYC. He won first prize in the 2003 Nantucket Chamber of Commerce Photography Contest, was selected to participate in The Salmagundi Club 2005 Annual Juried Photography Show, and in the Long Island Arts Council's 25th Annual Juried Photography Show in 2005.
